While most people probably think of Belgian waffles when they hear the word "waffles", German waffles are quite different, yet equally delicious. German waffles tend to be a lot flatter and softer and the most popular kind of waffle iron yields a flower-shaped waffle made up of 5 little hearts. This does not only look beautiful, but it also makes the waffle easier to eat and portion.
This recipe is a staple in our home and it elicits fond memories of childhood birthday parties for me. My mother used to make a dozen waffles and have the kids decorate them with M&Ms, whipped cream, chopped chocolate bars, powdered sugar, etc.
Ingredients:
Batter:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup caster sugar
4 tbsp brown rum (alternatively, 1/2 tube of Dr. Oetker rum flavoring)
250g (1 cup) unsalted butter
4 eggs
100g (1 cup) crushed almonds
1 tsp vanilla extract
6 tbsp lukewarm water
1 tsp baking powder
4(+) tbsp milk
Garnishes (optional):
Powdered sugar
Whipped cream
Yields around 8 waffles

I bought my waffle iron on amazon (this is not an ad) while it was on sale, but any similar waffle iron will do. While my recipe calls for brown rum, you can also substitute it with artificial rum flavoring to make it kid-friendly.
Sift the flour and mix with the sugar, baking powder and almonds. Add softened butter bit by bit, then add the eggs, vanilla extract, rum (flavoring) and water. Mix for about 1 min, then adjust the texture of the batter with milk. I usually add one tbsp of milk at a time. If you want fluffier, slightly thicker waffles, you will want to add very little milk. If you want thinner, more flexible waffles (and a higher waffle yield), you will want to add at least 4 tbsp of milk.
Add enough batter to the iron to fill about 1/2-2/3 the surface of the waffle iron, then bake the waffles until they turn slightly golden (as shown in the picture below).
Lastly, you can sprinkle the waffles with sifted powdered sugar and add whipped cream and/or your favorite kind of syrup.
